The new bridge connection over Tinnerbäcken in Linköping is part of a new development with refurbished baths and adjoining park, as well as new school and housing areas. The bridge proposal was developed as part of a parallel assignment organized by Linköping municipality, in which we have been the lead architect and worked together with Tyréns.

The project consists of a wooden glulam truss construction that allows the wood structure to form a legible space and with a clear shape in the large open space towards the park and within the dense vegetation of the ravine. During daytime, an interesting play of shadows appears on the bridge deck; when darkness falls, the bridge becomes a luminous lantern among the treetops.
From all sides, the bridge is perceived as a unitary whole made of wood, the material of the future.

Words from the jury: “The proposal reveals a design with a clear architectural expression that interacts with both the large-scale landscape and the ravine, as well as it is being experienced as a “room†in close-up scale. The relation to the form of the swimming pool’s roof construction and the bridges physical expression in the dark represent great qualities of the proposal.â€

The bridge over Varnan in Kristinehamn is a new connection in the city’s pedestrian and bicycle network, and a part of the overall design of the new city park at Svinvallen, designed by Karavan landscape architects.
The concept of the bridge is to make it “simple†in a positive sense, rather than letting the design dominate the landscape with spectacular gestures. The movement over the bridge is directed by inviting widenings at the entrance points, and by the outward angled sides at the midpoint of the bridge. An unexpected dynamic experience is created when the bridge span opens with views of the park, the water and the city.
The brownish color scheme in earth tones, make the bridge adapt to the surroundings. The contrast between the exterior and the inside of the bridge is emphasized by different shades of brown, and by a low intimate space created by light along the bridge deck. The bridge span the water in one section, and the architecture is an expression of the constructive system with sides of load bearing steel boxes, forming a flow of triangular volumes – an almost stealth like geometry. The railing emphasize the impression of triangular shapes as it appears to have a varying height that meets the sloping lines of the side beams.

The bridge over Vasadockan is designed based on the idea of a bare gangway spanning between the two quays, creating a gene crossing over the dock. The design is an expression of its construction, which is a Vierendeel girder, and the form enhances the idea of an object that is fitted in place. The idea is that the bridge in its scale and materiality should feel like an obvious, yet independent addition of the former yard environment. The bridge was lifted into place in one piece, and it is made of stainless steel, with insides covered with a stainless steel mesh. The bridge deck has a covering of untreaded fir planks which will turn gray with time.

The lighting of the bridge deck is recessed in the top railing.

Our focus is on high-quality design in the public domain! Our projects range from urban development in the concept stage to the buildings and facilities that may qualify as “commercial architecture” – terminals, stations, bridges and urban environments. The requirements for the design and operation is often dominant, but at the same time as it generated special architectural qualities. Many of the quests are the result of the first prizes in competitions and parallel assignments and we have been awarded with the Kasper Salin Prize for Arlanda Pier F, and the European Steel Design Award for Suspended ceiling in Vällingbyvägen Centre. Our clients are mainly government agencies, municipalities or publicly owned company and we are working through all phases of municipal planning, road and rail planning and until the tender and construction documents.

&Rundquist stands for the close cooperation – with our clients, with our partners, and not least within our project teams. At our office in Hammarby sjöstad in Stockholm, we are around 35 architects who work project-oriented in collaboration with landscape architects, engineers, real estate developers and other specialists. The office was started in 1993 under the name of Henrik Rundquist Arkitektkontor AB and operated during the period 1999 to 2008 under the name KHR Rundquist arkitekter ab, then co-owned by KHR Architects AS in Copenhagen.

Our focus lies on high-quality design in the public space and our projects range from urban design at the concept level to buildings and facilities like terminals, stations, bridges and urban environments. The demands on technology and function are often dominant, yet they generate unique architectural qualities. Many assignments are the result of a first prize won in competitions and parallel assignments and we have been awarded with both the Kasper Salin Prize for Arlanda Pier F, and the European Steel Design Award for the Floating Roof in Vällingby Centre and Sundsvall Bridge. Our clients are mainly government agencies, municipalities and publicly owned companies, and we are working through all stages of municipal planning, road and rail planning, all the way to specification and construction documents. From large-scale questions, in neighborhoods and complex buildings, down to the detailed design of equipment – we handle all aspects of the public space!

Under the title, PROJECTS, a selection of projects that describe the results of our work, is presented. Some are already built, some about to be realized, and some projects have not progressed beyond the early concept stage. From the large scale issues in neighbourhoods and complex buildings, down to the detail in the design of equipment – that is how we handle all aspects of public space!
