An openable pedestrian bridge proposed in an invited competition in the harbour of Norrtälje. In collaboration with Elu and Black light design. The bridge is part of a new development in the old harbor of Norrtälje, with 1300 – 1500 new apartments. The bride will play an important role in linking the new area with Societetsparken on the south side of canal, large green areas further out and with the central parts of Norrtälje.
The design of the bridge comes from the geometrical conditions of the site, where the needed free passage under the bridge in combination with the required ramp angel result in a bridge longer than the width of the canal. The bridge proposal show a sweeping form across the canal, describing both a movement, a direction and grows to inhabit a place for reflection. The choice of opening technic with a revolving bridge beam on a central support in the middle of the canal completes the idea of a smooth movement as if part of a turn of a propeller! The heavy central support gives the expression a steady simplicity. The variation in height of the construction beam express a balance of the revolving arms and the short cantilevers at the banks. The bridge beam is a steel construction with soft forms on the outer and under side of the bridge. The cross section is asymmetrical to fulfill the sweeping movement and the variation in width of the bridge.
