The tram depot at Aga, Lidingö, is a part of a Stockholm public transport project aiming to connect the existing Lidingö tramway with the new tramway system being constructed in Stockholm city. &Rundquist’s design of the buildings’ exteriors creates a roof landscape which easily adjusts to the buildings’ inner functions. The proposal for the depot has been processed from design concept to project planning document in collaboration with BBH Architects and Engineers. Coordinated with Lidingös’ detailed developement plan, the proposal was made ready for exhibition in the spring of 2012. Construction planning of the depot has subsequently been carried out by BBH Arkitektur & Teknik, the depot was completed in 2018.

As part of the development of the west part of Kungsholmen in Stockholm, a former industrial area changing into dense housing and office quarters, the bus depot at Hornsberg was going to replace the existing 1930s depot, now placing the depot underground, making the ground level available for the expansion of the city. A continuous façade screen wraps the extensive facility wherever it pops up. The project is now dormant.

Folke Bernadotte bridge is an important walking connection over Djurgårdsbrunnsviken, joining the northern and southern part of Djurgården, between the Museum Park and Rosendals castle. As early as 2004, The Royal Djurgården Administration took the initiative to investigate the opportunities for a bridge in this location where Karl XIV Johans floating bridge (1820-1846) and a temporary pedestrian bridge that was built for the Stockholm exhibition (1930) have historically been positioned.

The south part of DjurgÃ¥rden is one of Stockholm’s most popular areas and the most visited within the Royal National City Park. Both locals and tourists go there to experience the nature and the various cultural sights. Stockholm is increasingly growing, necessitating increased access to green areas. Today, the accessibility to the generous nature area in the south part of DjurgÃ¥rden is limited and unequally distributed. A new connection over DjurgÃ¥rdsbrunnsviken will enable people to easily reach the south part of DjurgÃ¥rden without depending on taking the car or bus.

The design of the bridge grew out of a careful analysis of the site and surrounding landscape, the movement patterns on site and the historical context. The main idea was to span over the entire bay in a single leap, without making a large and tall construction in the delicate historical landscape. This could be achieved through a three-span, vaulted beam bridge, where the end spans are very short and the middle span extends over the entire width of the water. In accordance with maritime traffic requirements, the bridge has 3 meters sail-free height, same as the adjacent bridges.

Supports and abutments are in concrete and hidden under the ground, making the bridge look like a single arch over the water. The beam structure is designed as a truss of stainless steel that provides transparency and lightness in its expression. The construction type is modern and effective, but it also makes a reference to the older bridges in vicinity, which with their truss constructions from the 19th century were the ‘high tech’ of their time.

As part of the development of the Northern Link, a new highway connection in Stockholm, &Rundquist has designed two ventilation towers, located in the National City Park in Stockholm.

Their function is to ventilate the air from Northern Link’s traffic tunnel and to reduce the emission levels at its entrances. The tunnels are connected to the corresponding tower by underground ducts. Fans in the channel have been designed to create a specific airflow through the ventilation towers.

The towers are made in wood for a better integration into the park environment while challenging preconceptions about how technological functions are usually designed. The idea of using wood throughout and not just as a cladding material, has a great symbolic value for the Northern Link project.

The construction is 20 meters high and is shaped as a super-triangle that pivots upwards, along its axis. The triangles gets wider as the tower rises to reduce the air resistance at its exit and therefore, optimize the general air flow exhaust. The twist gives the towers sleek lines and an expression that suggests the shape of the air in movement. The towers were parametrically 3d modelled to allow optimization and adjustments throughout the design process. The construction elements, delivered on site, are combined into super-triangles stacked on each other and tensioned together by vertical tie steel rods which are fitted with springs to avoid the structure to get torn when the wood moves.

The towers are clad with horizontal cedar sheets which follow the swiveling shape, accentuate the sculptural impression and create a varied image that change over time and with the viewing angle.

The towers were nominated to Träpriset 2015.

Between 2007 and 2014, we have worked with Tvärbanan Solnagrenen, an extension of the tramway network in the north of Stockholm, being involved in the process from early sketches and analysis down to the detailed design of the stops.

Solnagrenen is an extension of the tramline from Alvik to Solna Station, comprising almost 7 km of new railway. The line crosses through three municipalities – Stockholm, Solna and Sundbyberg and the tracks run mainly on a separate embankment, next to major traffic routes, but also as an integrated part of the street network.

The assignment focused initially on the development of a design tender for the entire northern line, developed in collaboration with Lab71. In the second phase we carried out the detailed design of the stops Solna Centrum and Solna Station with their platforms, platform furniture, retaining walls, etc. The stations Solna Centrum and Solna station were completed in 2013-14.
